Mike Beshears's father-in-law dies on 11 December 2004
From e-mail to the Class Webmaster, 12 December 2004, 11:41:19 EST

Sharon's Dad, Neal Wayne Cope, passed away peacefully on SAT, DEC 11 at around 4:30pm. Many of you knew how sick he became over the last two or three months, now Jesus has come to take him to the Promised Land where there will be no more pain and suffering, and to see his own son, Scotty Cope who we lost a couple of years ago. Tentative arrangements are that we plan to have visitation at Hayworth-Miller-Cain in Kernersville on MON, DEC 13 evening and then the funeral will be on TUE @ 11am at Union Grove Baptist Church (out Hwy 150 towards Oak Ridge). Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers. It is through those strong prayers that Neal was able to stay with us a few more days. The family will be at Papa and Nana's homeplace, just across from where we live. God Bless you all...please pray for strength and for the Lord's loving arms to bring peace to this family. Through His never-ending love, may we all find inner-peace.. The Beshears

  EFHS Class of 1979

  4612 White Rock Road
  Winston-Salem, NC   27105

Payment must be mailed by November 10, 2004. The venue has a maximum occupancy of 250, so it might behoove you pay as soon as possible. Also, keep in mind what happened with our original reunion plans...

If anyone has any questions, please contact Vera Salmons Guthrie.
Note well: This second attempt at a 25 year reunion is not simply the final chance for this reunion, but could well be the last attempt at a Class of 1979 reunion ever, and that's no exaggeration. We lost our $500 deposit with the Adam's Mark when we were forced to cancel the original reunion; as a result, the reunion committee has less than $300 in operating funds. The lack of money makes it difficult, if not impossible, for the reunion committee to perform even the most basic functions. Combine this with the apparent disinterest of our classmates and organizing a reunion becomes an exercise in futility. While this second chance reunion is more of an ad hoc affair than the original reunion, it is an opportunity to have a reunion this year and to support future reunions. Show your interest and support by sending your payment now!

Reunion Committee salvages part of our Silver Reunion
Although the Reunion Committee was forced to cancel the reunion social scheduled for 25 September 2004, we have salvaged something of our Silver Reunion by tying in with the activities surrounding East's Friday night football game on 24 September 2004.

We are going to have an informal social from 5-7 p.m. in the East Forsyth High School Courtyard; this could go longer for those who aren't interested in the game. Please note: no refreshments will be provided, though they may be available through vending machines or concession stands, or you can bring your own.

For those who'd like something to eat, the EFHS Booster Club will be holding their Pigskin Pickin' fundraiser from 5-7 p.m. as well. The menu includes barbeque, fried chicken, and all the fixin’s; the cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

As for the game, East Forsyth vs. North Davidson has a 7:30 p.m. kickoff and admission is $5.

Under the circumstances, we think an informal on-campus social combined with the Booster Club Pigskin Pickin' and a football game would make for an acceptable class reunion. What could be more appropriate than returning to our old school as a class for friendship, food, and football!? For those of us who have one, we can wear our Class of 1979 T-shirts from the last reunion and be our all-too-many obnoxious Boomer selves!!!

Hope to see y'all there and be sure to spread the word.

Reunion Committee cochair Lisa Sears Spoon comments on Reunion Social cancellation
I am assuming that the word is getting out about the cancellation of the reunion. I guess alot of you did not realize the importance of sending your money in on the first pricing structure. I guess maybe it was misleading that the low amount of funds that was left over from the 20th. The reason for that was we did not have alot to do the 20th. We planned this one a little bit nicer so folks would have someplace to go and catch up on conversations. We heard comments from the 20th that "it was too loud" and of course everyone that was there knows that we ran out of food. It all goes back to "you get what you pay for." Yes, I think we all were looking forward to this one. So if there is anyone out there that would like to take it upon themselves and get something started please feel free to contact Mike or myself. Wishing you all the best, Lisa

Reunion Committee cancels Silver Reunion Social
As the 25th reunion co-chairperson, perhaps I've overlooked something, and as a result we must cancel the 25th Reunion Social scheduled at the Adam's Mark in Winston-Salem on September 25, 2004.

What I've overlooked perhaps is the level of communication that would have let you all know how complex planning a reunion can be and the importance of showing your "commitment to attend" by sending in your reunion fee payment. As of today, only 34 alumni have paid for attending the reunion social on September 25, 2004.

Our commitment to the Adam's Mark was for $7500, or about 187 total people at $40/person. I personally thought that was very achievable given our extensive communication plans this year and with the wonderful job Matt Wallace had done with our web site, plus all the messages added to the message board on the web site. It seemed that everyone I personally talked to said, "I'm looking forward to coming ... sounds great!"

Unfortunately, not enough alumni acted on their intentions, at least from the perspective of sending in the much needed money to confirm and adequately plan for sufficient room, food, and beverage. I'm "dumb-founded" by this situation as none of the committee members have heard anything negative about the plans we made, and likewise have heard that most everyone they had talked to was coming.

All may not be lost as we are scrambling in an attempt to coordinate a much less formal social the night of September 24 as our Fighting Eagles take on North Davidson. That night happens to be the Pigskin Pickin' fundraiser for the school's booster club, thus we can help our school, eat, and enjoy a game all in the same night. There are more details to come, so stay tuned.

Finally, thanks to everyone who sent in their reunion fee. You will receive a refund directly.

Ignoring letter for jury service? Expect a deputy

By John Newsom, Staff Writer
News & Record

GREENSBORO -- Ignore that jury summons at your peril: Guilford County is cracking down on no-show jurors.

Chief District Court Judge Joseph E. Turner said Wednesday he will send out sheriff’s deputies about once a month to track down people who skip jury duty. About 40 people are due in court Aug. 31 to explain to the judge why they failed to show up for jury service last week.

[snip]

Turner’s move comes after Superior Court Judge
L. Todd Burke ordered Guilford County sheriff’s deputies to serve summonses to 49 people who skipped jury duty in April.

[snip]

Burke, who is based in Winston-Salem, cracked down on no-shows in April when only 62 of 265 people asked to appear for jury duty actually did so.

Of those 62, 14 were excused or deferred. That left only 48 potential jurors for the first-degree murder trial Burke was presiding over and two other Superior Court trials. Local juries have 12 people and an alternate.

So Burke went after 49 people who did not respond to their jury summons.

[snip]

Still, deputies found 10 people on Burke’s list who were deliberate no-shows and told them to be in court June 21.

Eight of them gave Burke various excuses, court records show. One man was working out of state when he was called for jury duty. Another was in jail. Still another had moved. Burke, who was out of his office on vacation Wednesday, assigned those eight to a jury pool that day so they could expunge a contempt of court charge from their records. A ninth person, a 75-year-old man, served although he did not have to. (Those 65 and older do not have to serve.)

A 10th person, a 32-year-old Greensboro man, told the judge that he threw the jury summons away because he did not think it was important. Burke sentenced him to 10 days in jail.

Reunion Committee announces plans for our Silver Reunion
Okay fellow alumni, the time has come to get serious about our 25th Reunion celebration. Here's what the reunion committee has determined so far:

1. Date: The reunion is set for Saturday, September 25, 2004. This is a fortunate date because the Fighting Eagles play North Forsyth at home on Friday, September 24 which allows us to schedule a tie-in activity. That means we have an opportunity to reserve a section of seats at the stadium for both the die-hard football fans and those who just wish to get an early start on seeing some fellow alumni and not really watching football.

2. Location: The reunion will be held at the Adams Mark Hotel in downtown Winston-Salem. The hotel is reportedly being sold which we hope doesn't affect our venue, but we'll have to stand by and see. Once you receive this message, please let us know if you're interested in staying at this fine hotel so that we can attempt to arrange for a discounted block of rooms. We don't have any specifics around the hotel yet, but that will be forthcoming.

3. Dress code: Simply come as you wish! We certainly don't expect cut-off blue jean shorts and tank tops, but if you wish to wear a pair of good blue jeans and a nice shirt, please feel free to do so. This means dress up if you like or simply dress to your comfort, just dress in something!

4. Entertainment: Right now all that is confirmed is a DJ, however we are working on some other things.

5. Food: Nothing confirmed yet, but you can bet we'll have a nice spread ... and plenty of it!

6. Beverages: A cash bar will be available, so bring additional money if you wish to consume adult beverages. We will have complimentary non-alcoholic beverages of assorted varieties for classmates who wish to remember our silver reunion.

7. Cost: This one is bit more tricky, so let us share our thinking with you. This is a special reunion, 25 years since we have been together as a class. We want to make this event special for you. Properly preparing and providing an ultimate experience requires your help by getting the funds we need to us as soon as possible so that we can pay for reunion items and services. Caterers must have confirmation of expected number of people in order to ensure sufficient food which is problematic if we have to increase our headcount by 25 or 50 at the last minute. If you must wait until the last minute, it will cost more because it could cost us more. Thanks for your understanding. Thus, to encourage early payment, we have adopted a tiered pricing structure:

    a) $50/person, $80/couple (if paid through June 30, 2004)
    b) $60/person, $90/couple (if paid from July 1 to August 31, 2004)
    c) $75/person, $100/couple (if paid from September 1 to September 25, 2004)

This means you can pay at the door, but please know that if you pay at the event, we can accept only cash, check, or money order and would prefer check or money order so we don't have to worry about change so much!

8. Payment: Please make your check or money order payable to "EFHS Class of 1979" and mail to:

    EFHS Class of 1979
    P.O. Box 1461
    Kernersville, NC   27285-1461
There is much, much more information to give you in the upcoming months, so stayed tuned to the
Reunions page for updates. By the way, we would appreciate your reaction to our plans thus far (positive and negative), and you may direct your comments to:

    a) The mailing address above,
    b) The class web site (efshs1979@yahoo.com with subject line "Reunion Feedback"),
    c) Michael Beshears (beshearsclan@triad.rr.com, (336) 996-2634), or
    d) Lisa Sears Spoon (lss@triad.rr.com, (336) 595-6271)

On behalf of the reunion committee, we are very excited about our 25th reunion plans and hope that you will make every attempt to be part of it. We look forward to seeing you in September!

New Year's greetings from the Class Webmaster
Happy New Year, classmates! Well, 2004 is finally here and with it
our silver reunion! Damn, I can't quite grasp the notion of a full quarter century since we graduated, but there it is! As always, thanks for keeping in touch through our site. As this is a reunion year, please be certain to keep your contact info current. Also, help find our missing classmates and tell them about our site and our upcoming reunion. Finally, please volunteer for the reunion committee if you'd like to help out.

For anyone wondering where the class newsletter is, I expect to send out the next issue this weekend. For Mike and the rest of the reunion committee, I plan on posting the info from our first meeting this weekend as well. To both I plead being worked to near-exhaustion during UPS's peak season while also fighting a two-plus week series of colds. (Hmm, 'twas the season!?) Sure, I'm bigger and stronger in my maturity than I was in high school, but I just need more time to bounce back even without being tag-teamed!

My best to everyone for 2004, and I hope to see y'all at the reunion!
